Peter Shumlin, Governor-elect

Democracy. What democracy? I voted. So what? People vote against their interests, unless they have a reason founded on some moral issue to motivate them. Too hard to follow the issues, because you have to read papers, which, in the case of the Burlington Free Press, don’t tell you enough, or watch TV, which, in the case of WCAX, just cover what they can. No real editorial comments worth remembering. Candidates are rock stars, only interested in winning office and staying there. So, I get to vote. Then they do whatever they want without really telling you why, supporting whomever brought them to the dance, disenfranchising the rest of us.

Republicans don’t like anything. Democrats like everything. Shumlin will become Governor for as long as he wants. Not a chance he can reduce the budget deficit, lower taxes, rebuild the infrastructure, or reduce the prison population. We won’t have medical marijuana, single payer health insurance, or more jobs. Young adults will continue to leave the State. The Lake won’t get cleaner. And we will have fewer rich and more poor. But it will be better than if Dubie got elected.

Seriously

People take voting seriously. Why? Like jury duty, they cannot imagine living without it. At least some of the people. How many of these voters actually can explain the bond issue issue that appeared on the ballot? How many understand the ballot issue dealing with giving 17-year-olds the right to vote in primaries. I say, if people are casting their votes based on the projected deficits their unborn grandchildren will inherit, we should have someone who casts votes for unborns. They pay attention when they vote so they don’t mess up the ballot; better you should pay attention to the issues, not neatness, if your want the vote to matter.

What are elections about? They are a jobs program for the people who push the counting machines: lobbyists, advisors, television stations, party workers, caterers, drivers and those wanting ambassadorships, judgeships, and the positions that come with them. How many billions were spent? No other country does this. Elections are about jobs, just not the ones that those elected have allowed to disappear.
