Very upset, I am, as I leave for a week at Maine Media Photocamp after reading today’s article on the upsurge in killings of street people in the New York Times. The paper of record called them homeless. I don’t know exactly what that means, so I will leave it for another time. And, I don’t necessarily think that the rise in killings has at its genesis hatred, but the fact that people kill these people because they can for whatever reasons or no reasons at all disturbed me more than the Pew report that the number of people who believe President Obama is a muslim has risen.
I really wonder about some my neighbors and fellow countrymen. Do they read? Do they think? Is there some issue that can be discussed before the entire thread goes back to kids, grandkids, and the unborn?
Any short discussion of any merit, conversations where people think they are bearing their inner souls, inevitably turn to the same old shit I have been fighting for years. “Why don’t they work.” “Why don’t they bathe.” Why do they drink.” “Why do we pay for them.” “If they want to look the way they do or act the way they act, let them do it other than on [Fill In Street].” Then it finishes with some thought about what good people they are except for this and how they gave at the office.
I see my guys in the mornings when they come out into the public spaces. Lots of times they look beat up. Maybe its internicine violence. Maybe its headers into the pavement. But sometimes, I think its the result of violence by those who feel a need to do vigilante justice or just show off their ability to hurt others who cannot defend themselves. And the saddest thing is that the establishment does not care and will not listen to their complaints, because they are who they are.
I hope that all my guys are here when I get back.
