What to give a homeless person for Thanksgiving? How about foot powder?
People who live on the street walk everywhere. Foot ache, foot pain, and foot disease affect their mobility and well-being. They wear leather boots with thick soles. To create warmth, they layer socks, one-two-three. The stacking causes pressure that can cut off circulation. Some already have medical conditions that promote gangrene and who knows what else. Heat protects against freezing, but it also causes a moisture buildup, which can promote a wide variety of foot diseases, the least of which come from toe nails that don’t get cut, infections from splitting and bad odors. Jump’s homeless clients regularly ask for foot powder. So, after volunteering at JUMP Monday morning, I bought a few containers to distribute.
Paul gladly accepted a can. He has grace and charm. Someone, either a cop or a social worker of some sort, professional or otherwise, said that family had called, inquiring about his well being. We talked about what he should do. He has a phone number. To call or not to call, that is the question.
Lorin,
Thank you so much for the overwhelming gift. Paul looks good. Thank you for capturing on film—his smile, essence and being. I left you a message at home—tearful, exuberant, sad and hopeful. I want to talk to him, hold him, help him, respect him. My home number is 802 626 7263. I live in Sheffield, not far from Bread & Puppet.
Love,
Mary
