Lake Champlain has not risen this high since 1862. Not around to see that event, but I, along with others will remember this overfilling of the tub. Heavy rains. Lots of snow. Water needs somewhere to go.
The omnipresent Champ keeps watch.
Girls just want to have fun.
Or, just sit in the sun.
Weather chilly. Phil rode his bike down the hill. Comes here everyday. He awaits the Spring to cookout behind the water treatment building or at North Beach.
Muskrat slides on the ice, seeking cover, blending in to the winter cover colors.
Phil’s off on his bike to the library. Well maintained, the parts come from spares he gathers from well-off UVM students who also help him with bottles when he needs some tobacco money. Sturdy and reliable transportation, doctor told him, “bicycle riding is good for the heart.” He says, despite some pressing health problems, that he always has a good day. Talking with him made mine.
He stands tall, despite the cold. Undervalued, underused, and under appreciated. But he doesn’t give up.
Papa Neutrino left Burlington on a makeshift raft with three dogs and three other people. The raft barely made it to Charlotte before winds, waves and the elements did his craft in. Leaving aside the danger he put rescuers in, not to mention his crew, and the equipment damaged during efforts to save him, he left garbage on the shore of Lake Champlain despoiling one of our most valuable and beloved assets. How ironic that those who authorized his boat as water worthy have to look from their station at his mess.
Not today. Papa had his pacemaker replaced. Now scheduled for Saturday departure.
Papa Neutrino’s raft is moored near the Coast Guard Station in Burlington. Planned embarkation is scheduled for November 5. When asked if a destination has been chosen, Scott said, “we intend to start here in Burlington and end here.”
