One goes. One comes. My friend Barry said he looks depressed. Not for me to judge, though he don’t look happy during his holiday season. I’d say he looks cold and alone.

Paul Leaves Burlington with his Sister Mary
Paul’s sister Mary heard the cry for help. She has heard it before. Family’s get tired rescuing. She didn’t, appearing on Church Street on Sunday. He had slept on a grate, somewhere, before settling in the doorway in front of the sex shop. Cold. Bitterly cold.

Jesse on Church for Thankgiving after Sweetwater’s
Looking for a ride to the Ho Hum Motel. Says he had a free room. No buses running on the holiday. Ate at the annual community feeding at Sweetwaters. Carried a takeout tin with leftovers. May have picked up some clothes also. Not that far to his bedroom for the night, maybe two miles; two miles with a heavy pack on his back.
Larry on Church for Birthday
Larry stopped me to wish him a happy 61st birthday. Friends gave him a family picture, aping one of his street disguises. Burlington born and bred, hope he survives the winter and doesn’t become one of Burlington’s dead.

Jim Winner Dead
Jim Winner died at 81. He developed the Club Antitheft device for cars, changing the lives of car thieves and car owners. No longer could someone with a screwdriver pop the ignition and drive a car away, basically without fear of being caught; no longer did drivers park their cars, fearing they would not be there upon return. Not sure whether theft insurance dropped in price, but anxiety certainly did.
